The Growing Demand
Recent statistics from the Australian Children’s Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and the Department of Education highlight the importance of childcare centres operating in a professional manner and fulfilling their ethical and moral obligations. These statistics demonstrate the growing need for high-quality early childhood education and care services.
As of June 2021, more than 90% of services have met or exceeded the National Quality Standard (NQS) in Australia, with 94% of preschool programs and 93% of long day care programs rated as meeting or exceeding NQS. By June 2022, 83% of services had met or exceeded NQS requirements (ACECQA, 2022).
In New South Wales, the demand for childcare services has increased dramatically in recent years. The NSW government’s Long Day Care Demand and Supply Report 2019 indicated a 7% increase in the number of children attending long day care between 2016 and 2019 (Department of Education, 2019). This trend is expected to continue, with the NSW Department of Education predicting that the number of children in long day care will increase by 27% between 2021 and 2031 (Department of Education, 2020).
